Seewolf’s cinematic indie rock is a big and beautiful hymn to the Frisian landscape. The moving result of the wild interaction between the inner and outer world. The eternal wind, the water pounding on the coast, the mighty dikes, the lighthouse shining over the vast land and time moving just a little slower there.
Their incredible debut album ‘A Bounce of Grace’ oozes that same openness, on which four inspired musicians push each other in the spirit of bands like Motorpsycho, The Veils and The Doors. It features songs that stand firmly with their feet in the Frisian clay. The same clay that sticks to the band members’ shoes and that they take everywhere with them in their old touring van, in which they drive to new horizons. The band is always on its way to new adventures, whether that be touring or creatively. Ultimately, it all starts on the outskirts of the Netherlands, where the group retreats from a busy society and forgets time for a moment, as they slowly disappear into their music.
During the recording process of their debut album, a starring role was reserved for a unique fifth band member: The band imported and restored an analog tape recorder from the famous Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco. The machine, a device used by icons such as Tom Waits, Van Morrison and Neil Young to record their albums, became an indispensable ingredient in the ongoing search for the timeless sound of music from the sixties and seventies that inspire Seewolf. After years of recording and tweaking in the cold north of the Oudebildtdijk, Seewolf’s atmospheric debut album captures an organic sound thanks to this approach.
‘A Bounce of Grace’ is a beautiful journey through the dynamics of sound, from the arena filled anthem ‘Run & Hide’ to the upbeat feel of the titular track, there is something here for everyone to enjoy. With atmospheric vocals from Dolf Kuiken backed by otherworldly instrumentals, ‘A Bounce of Grace’ is a monumental achievement in sound. It perfectly captures the natural talent of the band, whilst showing huge promise for their next chapter.
Seewolf consists of Dolf Kuiken (vocals, guitar), Willem Bijma (guitar, keys), Bram Welbedacht (bass guitar) and Joop Visser (drums).
