Interview with Don’t Wake the Neighbours

Today, we sat down with the band Don’t Wake The Neighbours. We discussed their inspiration to write music, heroes, and more! Be sure to check out the music of Don’t Wake The Neighbours below after the interview!

Interview:

What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?

I take inspiration from anything and everything. Stylistically, the music I write will reflect a lot of what I’ve been listening to at the time, so if I’m listening to a band like Ghost (for example), it’ll be a lot heavier, but if I’m listening to something like Frightened Rabbit, it might be softer and more open.

When it comes to the subject of my songs, I just write about what I think would be good, some of them my own experiences, some of them very clearly not (our song about being a hired killer comes to mind). Whatever idea pops up into my head I try to turn into a song, and sometimes it’s really cool.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

I listened to a lot of classic albums growing up. My parents would play me stuff like Elton John, Bowie, and Queen, as we were driving to school. We wouldn’t listen to the radio very often, so I had quite an old school influence.

Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?

My music teachers growing up were always amazing. They would always encourage me to do as much as I could and pushed me to be as good as I could be. People like that really matter to me, my parents were the same, always incredibly encouraging and wanting the best for me. They’ve all really helped me in my journey so far.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?

I have absolutely no clue. I like to think there’s nothing else that I could be doing.

I played a lot of sports growing up, so maybe something to do with that? I’ve always liked working in a team, which is why being a part of a band is so much fun. I used to play cricket to a decent level, so perhaps I would have stuck with that and gotten better.

What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?

Just do it! There’s nothing better than being able to do something you love, and if you haven’t tried it yet, you don’t know how amazing it can make you feel! Reach out to others, work together, and find your sound.
