MxNxSTxR and Destructo’s long-awaited follow up to 2022’s “All Of Me” arrives as a unique collaboration with “What You Need” feat. Thundercat & Channel Tres. The r&b infused, disco-funk jam is a co-production between DESTRUCTO and MxNxSTxR creating a fresh set of intoxicating melodies and basslines for the place where the two artists share their passion: the dancefloor.

Anyone familiar with “Oh Sheit, It’s X” knows Thundercat thrives on a dance track. Here, Thunder delivers falsetto and thick slabs of bass to a rush of French touch, perfect for under a disco ball or under the sun. Offsetting the heat of the dancefloor or summer sun like a cool breeze comes Channel Tres, his effortlessness and poise made evident with a smooth verse. It all comes together so seamlessly, because everyone here is an expert at what they do.

All four artists share overlapping histories with each other across the 2020s, and “What You Need” is years in the making, the idea first birthed at a writing session in the MxNxSTxR’s studio during the Pandemic lockdowns in LA 2020 followed by 2022’s “All of Me,” the first taste of their project for fans which amassed over 555,000 plays worldwide. Ty Dolla $ign has appeared on Destructo’s iconic HARD music festivals and Friendship cruises over the years, with MxNxSTxR making his seafaring debut earlier this year. Between the four LA artists are various collabs over the years. Thundercat tapped Ty Dolla for the track “Fair Chance” from his GRAMMY-winning album It Is What It Is, and more recently collaborated with Channel Tres on the track “Candy Paint” from his debut album Head Rush (2024). That same year, Ty and Channel also teamed up for “Holy Moly.” Destructo and Ty’s collaborative efforts stretch back to 2016 with “4 Real,” a stand out track also featuring ILOVEMAKONNEN from Destructo’s Renegade EP

About DESTRUCTO:

Since 2011, DESTRUCTO (Gary Richards) has dominated the dance floor on his own terms. Early EP’s Technology (2012) and Higher (2013) lead into DESTRUCTO introducing the realm of g-house (where rap melds with house music) with West Coast (2014), boasting collaborations with YG, Ty Dolla $ign, Problem, Too $hort, Warren G, and Kurupt and its follow up RENEGADE which featured collaborations with E-40 and Too $hort, Ty Dolla $ign & iLoveMakonnen, Pusha T & Starrah, Problem and Freddie Gibbs. Notable single releases include “Loaded” featuring Yo Gotti and “You Only Die Once” featuring Snoop Dogg and high profile remixes for artists as diverse as Dolly Parton, Depeche Mode, Giorgio Moroder, Major Lazer, Idris Elba, Digitalism and more. In addition to being a music producer and DJ, Richards is also a notable tastemaker in electronic music as a record label executive and festival founder. Having been handpicked by legendary producer Rick Rubin to handle A&R duties for the electronic music division at Def American Recordings and as a recording artist and producer/DJ himself, under the moniker DESTRUCTO, Richards knows firsthand how to identify and nurture new and developing talent. Richards launched the first Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in 1991, HARD Events festival in 2007 and music cruises HOLY SHIP! in 2012 and Friendship in 2018. He has been included on the “50 Most Important People in EDM” list by Rolling Stone twice and featured on Billboard’s annual Dance Power Players list of DJs and execs for multiple years.

About Channel Tres:

Channel Tres, emerged from Compton’s musical scene as a purveyor of innovation, pushing the traditional spirit of West Coast rap into unexplored territories. He’s toured globally, from major festivals to sold-out arenas. For Channel, music is about reconnecting with his own history, whether it’s in his lyrics, or through the influences and musical history that he uncovers in his production. His last EP i can’t go outside debuted in Spotify’s Top 10 US Album Debuts with features from Tyler, The Creator and Tinashe. With his forthcoming debut album Head Rush, he opens his most exciting musical chapter to date. For Channel Tres, the decision to finally drop an LP is a deeply personal one. “There were things about my story that I didn’t know how to express, musically or lyrically,” he says. But after a sometimes trying period of growth, he’s finally ready to articulate this chapter of his life: “I would say my artistry has grown to a place where I’m comfortable sharing this much at one time.” Head Rush is a richly layered record, but one that feels totally intuitive, without a trace of doubt or self-consciousness. Throughout his career, Tres has blended recognizable genres, textures, and points of view into a truly singular form all his own. Longtime listeners will recognize in Head Rush the hallmarks of a Channel Tresrecord: a mastery of rhythm, the rare ability to make songs sinister and fluorescent at once.
