Hogwarts Legacies Playstation 4 Review

Game review by Samantha Ysaguirre

Hogwarts Legacy is a 2023 action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. It is immersive and beautifully designed. It offers gamers various quests, puzzles, mini-games, and the option to follow a storyline.

Immediately upon beginning the game, viewers are hit with intensity in the story, which then transitions into the moment every viewer waits for: their acceptance letter to Hogwarts and The Hat Sorting Ceremony. Players get to design their character and have the ability to make them look like themselves. The choice is yours; even when picking your house, players can communicate with the sorting hat, answering questions that help determine who they are and where they belong, or players can freely select the house they feel they belong in.

The opportunity to be entertained for hours is endless; on average, the total completion time of the game, including the storyline and side quests, is 60 to 80 hours.

One of the game’s standout features is its open-world map, which encompasses the Hogwarts school grounds and the outside world, including the town of Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest. This expansive map allows players to explore whichever area they choose. However, it’s worth noting that certain quests can only be unlocked as players progress in the storyline, which can disrupt the flow of exploration.

While it’s disappointing that familiar characters like Dumbledore, Professor Snape, Ron, or Hermione don’t appear, the game’s original and new characters contribute to a more personal and unique experience at Hogwarts. However, it’s important to note that the game’s story does have a few plot holes, possibly due to J.K. Rowling’s limited involvement in the gaming version, which gave the writers more creative freedom.

Overall, the game features stunning graphics that vividly bring the wizarding world to life. The game creators skillfully recreate iconic locations and magical creatures, impressing fans with intricate details. The combat system is also smooth and fluid, allowing players to execute spells seamlessly and engage in dynamic duels, enhancing the immersive experience.

Pros:

  • Option to pick your house and design your character
  • Option to explore Hogwarts and experience life as a student
  • Experience the Dark Arts and learn original spells
  • Explore off the grounds of Hogwarts

Cons

  • Original characters are not in the game.
  • It is not as interactive, as players can not
sleep or sit at the table for the feasting
  • Storyline plot holes

Rating: 7 out of 10
