FINN WOLFHARD RELEASES DEBUT SOLO RECORD HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Today, multi-hyphenate Finn Wolfhard releases his debut solo record Happy Birthday, out everywhere now via AWAL. On Happy Birthday we see Wolfhard firmly take the reins as a solo songwriter and performer following his previous work with Calpurnia and The Aubreys.

The nine-track album, a vibrant and emotionally charged collection, originated from a personal challenge Wolfhard set for himself: to write 50 songs by the end of 2022. Throughout the record, he delves into themes of anxiety, self-discovery, the ever-changing dynamics of relationships, and the nostalgic freedom of childhood. With a perspective that balances emotional maturity and youthful introspection, Happy Birthday offers a dynamic and deeply relatable portrait of the transition out of adolescence.

Album focus track “Crown” serves as a standout, reminiscing on carefree pastimes. The song is tracked live with Kai Slater and Isaac Lowenstein of Lifeguard, Aubrey’s producer Cadien Lake James, and Free Range’s Sofia Jensen.

For Wolfhard, the album is another accomplished step forward in his evolution as a musician, songwriter and citizen of planet Earth. “If I were to walk away and listen to it in 10 years, I think it would feel like the beginning of a specific style and voice,” he says. “It can be interesting being a younger person in any kind of industry, because even though I’ve been acting for a long time, I’m still only 22, and things start to take shape at different times in your life. I hope that when I look back on this record, I’ll be proud of the melodies and the songwriting. I want to be accepting of myself at that time. It was okay that I felt like that and made a record about it and then moved on to new experiences.”

Previous album singles gave fans a preview of the unique, nostalgia-tinged sound they could expect from Happy Birthday. First offering “Choose the latter” is a bright earworm with sunny guitars, while “Trailers after dark” serves as the perfect ballad for a rainy day. Recent release “Objection!” follows the journey of the ups and downs of losing yourself in a relationship, accompanied by a music video shot entirely on 16mm film.

Last evening, Finn kicked off his West coast run of headlining shows, titled the Objection! Tour, at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles. Following a second sold-out show in Los Angeles tonight at Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Masonic Lodge, the tour will hit San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and conclude with two nights in Finn’s hometown of Vancouver.
