Darkwave enthusiasts, get ready to be enveloped in the evocative sounds of Last Grasp. Founded in 2021 by Florida-based artist Matthew DeFeis, Last Grasp bridges past and present, drawing from the icy textures of darkwave, industrial’s relentless energy, and deathrock’s raw, piercing guitars. DeFeis, together with producer and childhood friend Boris Stojanović, brings a unique spin to the genre, crafting sounds that pay homage to goth music’s 80s and 90s roots while infusing them with a contemporary edge.
The band has seen some exciting lineup changes, with the addition of Jaysik Smith on bass and Lo Ormachea on synthesizer, adding depth to Last Grasp’s sonic landscape. Their newest release, “Creature of Your Kind,” exemplifies the group’s genre-blending prowess. The track explores intense attraction and intrigue, capturing the essence of lust as it takes hold of the senses. Describing the song, DeFeis shared: “This track came together seamlessly between Boris and me. We fell in love with the chorus immediately, and that feeling persisted as we worked.”
Boris, based in Serbia, and DeFeis in Florida, have perfected a method of remote collaboration, trading stems across continents to refine Last Grasp’s distinctive sound. The result is a record that resonates with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
With sounds reminiscent of darkwave and post-punk contemporaries like Vandal Moon and Drab Majesty, Last Grasp is building a legacy of their own, steeped in rich, moody atmospheres and electric intensity. “Creature of Your Kind” is now available on all major streaming platforms, offering listeners a dark and mesmerizing journey into the heart of goth revival.
