Today we sit down with Subliminal Landmines to talk about music inspiration, type of music growing up and of course words for fellow musicians out there. Be sure to check out their music below after the interview!
Here is the interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?
Grant : I usually write from emotion from past experiences. How it made me feel, how it impacted me and even how it changed me. Anger, sadness, happiness, and etc.
Chris : Mostly personal experiences and feelings. Most things I write, at least have some subtext that means something to me.
Lee : Being a drummer I don’t really write a whole lot. But I do try to be a creative as I can, playing punk rock it a lot of just “bass snare bass snare” and I really try to get out of that when I can. Having drumline and rudimentary training, it’s very fun to do.
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
Grant : I mainly listened to a variety of rock growing up but in my teenage years I listened to more hip hop and rap. When i got into my 20’s I kind of went back to my roots and listened to rock the majority of the time.
Chris : Rancid, Primus, Alkaline Trio, At the Drive In, Hot Water Music, and Misfits were some of the main things. I still find myself rocking those bands.
Lee : I started getting into music in the grunge Era. But soon feel in love with bands like Blink 182, NFG, and Green Day, also obsessing with 311, Incubus and Dave Matthews Band as I started discovering talented drummers.
Is there someone you looked up as a hero?
Grant : Someone I’ve always looked up to since I started playing guitar was Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. The way he carries himself and his IDGAF attitude has always been something that I strive for in myself. Green Day is also one of favorite bands and they are the reason I really started playing guitar so there is that as well.
Chris : Freddy Krueger… I just wanted people to dream about me
Lee : Two I can say for sure. Neil Peart (Rush) and Travis Barker (Blink 182) and I try to combine my playing to have a taste of both. The speed of Travis with the occasional technicality of the legend Neil Peart.
If you weren’t a musician, would you be doing today?
Grant : I work fulltime so if I wasn’t a musician then I would probably have another hobby that would fill my time besides work.
Chris : Probably sustaining some serious burn scars from some angry neighbors.
Lee : Prolly something similar to my day job, driving a truck route or perhaps a forklift. I could never see myself in an office job, and love the road.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?
Grant : If you want to create music, then just do it. Don’t let people tell you what your capable of. In the long run everything will pay off as long as you stick to it. Just have fun and try not to let yourself get discouraged
Chris : Crack out on it! Get weird. Learn what you need and start writing. Find your style and run with it.
Lee : It’s simple. Do what you love. Also, being in bands is like dating, you have to be in a few before you know what you really like, and don’t worry if your band isn’t exactly what you listen to on a regular basis. I listen to a lot of heavy stuff, metal, prog and djent, but always love the simplicity and energy that punk gives me!
