Today we sat down with musician SJ Denney to talk about him writing music, what he listened to growing up and much more! Be sure to check out his music below right after the interview!
Here is the interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?
Like many artists, I take a lot of inspiration from my personal life… my family, my personal situation and work. I also like to write about the wider world, such as COVID-19, politics and global warming. I’m basically inspired by everything around me
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
60s-90s rock… The Beatles, David Bowie, Neil Young, Guns n’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis. All of these artists had a big impact on my life and influenced the style of music I write.
Is there someone you looked up as a hero?
Sir Paul McCartney. For me, the greatest composer of all time.
If you weren’t a musician, would you be doing today?
I honestly don’t know where I’d be without music. It’s got me through so many difficult situations. I think I’d have to be involved in music in some way. Perhaps reviewing other people’s material.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?
I think the simple advice is to play what you feel, then people will hopefully feel what you play. There’s very little point in pretending to be something you’re not. Most of the time it comes across as insincere, meaning it’s less likely to get you what you want anyway.
