Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?
My inspiration comes from many places. From the inception of my writing experience I was keen to look at areas of our experience which were less documented in song and I have always had a huge interest in the inner journey, the spiritual, mental and emotional journey and the subjects of courage and resilience.
So for years I resisted writing songs about human love as this subject had been tackled in so many ways by so many songwriters for so long.
My family and friends also inspire songs and I am very interested in the quantum universe and how it interacts and affects our macro universe. I wrote a song called Unified Field about this and the quantum idea that we dip in and out of a unified field of consciousness. But I think that the most important is talked about in my most recent single called Fear Destroyer from my new album called Art.
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
I was brought up with my parents singing and playing Gospel music which is powerful and moving to both mind and to soul. We were also brought up with Van Morrison albums as my father used to play with Van when they were very young. I think that 60’s soul music is wonderful also (Motown/ Stax Volt…) and then in my mid teens I discovered indie and alternative music and my significant discovery there was The Smiths.
Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?
My heroes are compassion, empathy and selfless love and real peace within and without and I can see these profound, life altering things borne out in The Beatitudes. The Logos is my hero.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
I would be trying to communicate meaningfully in some way with people to try to encourage, empower and empathise and to try to in some small way spread compassion and light in any way I could/can.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?
Don’t be afraid! Use your instinct, look inside and follow your heart. See your inner artist first and don’t worry about whether you are “taught” or “qualified”. Music creation is a profound privilege and honour, enjoy it and don’t be afraid to dig deep and search. I was not “taught” how to write or play I simply “did” it and continue to “do” it and I am ever grateful for it.
What can you tell us about your latest release ‘Fear Destroyer’?
Fear Destroyer is written in response to how my journey is changing and has moved towards real, tangible freedom from anxiety and fear to faith and belief in a loving higher power which identifies deeply with each of us and wants to heal, nurture, protect and liberate us from fear by means of profound love. This love permeates the sub atomic fabric of everything beyond even the quantum level. This song encapsulates my message to the world of the importance in the belief of one divine Creator who alleviates suffering and offers peace and love.
This song is a joyous explosion of light, love and liberation and becoming spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally whole.
For me personally I have a personal relationship with the Logos / Jesus Christ and this is incredibly relevant now more than ever for me.
