Today, we sat down with Open Window to discuss their inspiration to write music, heroes, and much more! Be sure to check out Close Your Eyes music video below from Open Window after the interview!
Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?
Not every song manifests the same way. Oftentimes personal experience, or occasionally witnessing another person’s experience, can spawn inspiration in me (Daniel). With regards to Close Your Eyes, it was an actual writing/jam session with James (Guitar). He presented a guitar “riff” to me that he had been working on. I very quickly began scatting melodies and words, a few of which are present in the final recording. I (Daniel) took our ideas home and woodshedded for a few days and emerged with verses and a Chorus. I presented what had to James and Wayne, and from there the guys rounded out the musical transitions and the bridge – Voila, we had a finished song! So, we attacked that one
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
My (Daniel) first exposure to music was my parents exposing me to their music – 60’s Rock n Roll and Motown. By the time I was an adolescent, I was listening largely to Hard Rock.
Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?
Sure, when I (Daniel) was a youth. These days, not so much. My early music heroes were John, Paul, George, and Ringo; Jimi Hendrix; Plant & Page; Ozzy; Bono.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
I (Daniel) was an avid drawer and illustrator when I was young. Perhaps a graphic artist, author, and/or animator of some sort?
What can you tell us about ‘Close Your Eyes’, and its accompanying music video?
Lyrically – at its core – the song is about a person having to go on a long journey for a very long time, perhaps forever, but leaving someone they love behind.
Music Video – Our film crew was young, ambitious, and brought a lot of excitement and energy to the shoot. We really went into the shoot with no preconceptions. We each leaned into our performances and worked diligently to stay on schedule. From there, we entrusted the Director to create his vision for the video.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create
music?
It depends what age you are. If you are in your somewhere in your teens to an early adult, I (Daniel) would say learn from those that came before you. Go back as far as you can and absorb what you are hearing and experiencing. Influences will eventually begin to manifest in what you create. If you are an adult – say 30 years and older – it is all about discipline. You know the saying, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” Don’t be lazy. Work hard and work consistently to improve at your craft or instrument. The beautiful thing about creating music is – so long as you are breathing – you can keep growing and improving.
