Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?
L.A. is a super creative town. It definitely plays a role in our collective creativity. We feed on it. But all of us love music and want to entertain and uplift people through music. That’s what drives us the most. We’re super passionate about it and have a unique connection with each other when writing music. Get us all into a studio and things just take off for us.
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
We all grew up on rock and roll. Bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, KT Tunstall, Avril Lavigne, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, INXS, 28 Days, Nirvana, Pearl Jam. While we all listened to different bands and types of rock, it’s something that we all share.
Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?
We admit it’s corny, but we’d have to say our fathers. We’ve actually talked about this a few times as a band: we all shared a love for our fathers. Nowadays we look up to musicians like Angus Young and John Frusciante and Tom Morello and Noel Gallagher. But that wasn’t us as kids. It was our dear pops.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
Oh, no, do we have to answer this? (covering their eyes) We don’t want to even think about this. It’s too damn scary. We’re so super thankful to be musicians.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create
music?
Go for it! It’s so much fun and so worth doing! Go deep into an instrument. Get really good at playing the guitar, or the drums or at singing. See them as crafts. And take the time to learn one of the Digital Audio Workstations like Abelton Live or Logic Pro. They are so helpful to creating music or capturing ideas that you can then share with your bandmates. You can also use them to record and release your music as a band.
What can you tell us about your latest single ‘Mrs. Davis’?
It’s an epic tale about a suburban housewife gone very wrong. It started with a Troy Gale riff and ended with a great character story by Hannah. We loved working on it together and with our producer, Philip Paulsen. He was super helpful in bringing everything to life. Will had the idea for the bridge. Since the housewife goes on to kill her husband at the end (sorry, spoiler alert), he thought the bridge should sound creepy like we’re going into the Twilight Zone. Overall, we’re really happy with how it turned out and hope you enjoy it.
