Today, I was able to sit down with Lullaby Riot to discuss their inspiration to write music, heroes, and much more! Be sure to check out the music of Lullaby Riot on Spotify below after the interview.
Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?
Of course, I write about what I know so the environment I’m in inspires me in a lot of ways, good and bad. That’s lyrically at least, aside from that I get the small amount of musical theory I know, I take my musical fishing rod and head down to pond and see what I can catch
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
Initially it was a lot of nu metal coming over from the states in the early 2000’s, which I still love but I can’t say it inspires me musically, it’s more for nostalgia. The Clash were the first big inspiration, the way they played, the things they sang about. They often called themselves a “news giving group” which I felt was quite interesting. I took that to mean that they didn’t just write about the things most groups did, but to try and bring awareness to things that the news didn’t cover, which must have been interesting in a time without the internet.
Is there someone you looked up as a hero?
Joe Strummer absolutely, the more I read about him I felt I could identify with parts of him. I thought his real name was Strummer for a while, I thought how funny he ended up being a guitarist with a surname like that.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
I’m not sure, maybe a career in one of the many jobs I had?
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?
Grab whatever instrument you can find and start making mistakes, and then the mistakes start getting less and less, and every song you write is better than the last. Noel Gallagher says something about music being different to a video game, there isn’t any level to beat. Which I think is great, it’s never over. Learn as much as you want, there’s still more to learn.
