Interview with Lake Mar/e

Today, I sat down with Lake Mar/e to discuss their inspiration to write music, heroes, and much more!  Be sure to check out the music and social media of Lake Mar/e below after the interview.

Interview:

What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?

Us Marmenites of Lake Mar/E create journeys; not just statements.  Sometimes I (Stephen) think about personal or philosophical topics, and attempt to map the emotional development of said topic in musical terms.  Other times, it’s an investigation of music theory.  Occasionally, it’s just having fun rocking out.  There is usually something very intentional behind each section of each song.

The lyrical component usually reaches within.  Take for example this excerpt from Reanimatrix:
I’m alive!
Resurrected
Split up,
reconnected—
You make me feel myself
Reanimatrix reflects on the harsh effects of volatile relationships; with a Mary Shelley spin.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

We all grew up appreciating (some of) what MTV was selling us (when music was their business), and the 1 penny-10 CD contract haha.  I believe we all grew up with the 60s-90s rock background…thanks Dad.  I (Stephen) personally got into a brief punk rock phase when I first started learning guitar; then it was a head-first into metal, classical, and jazz.

Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?

Oddly, I admired the moral character of a particular dog above all human role-model candidates.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?

Aside from coping with the pit in my heart: the same thing with a few less strings, and tubes

What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?

Don’t lol
But if you must try your luck at fame and fortune through the most overly saturated market throughout all time and space within the entire multiverse…then I invite you to consider a few hard realities:
– artists currently upload over 200 days worth of music every single day to Spotify.  I’m guessing there are at least 2 bands out there that have written the same songs that we have.  Finding those bands, on the other hand, would be a statistical anomaly.
– If you have something special to show the world…consider this: the music industry hasn’t been “about the music” in your lifetime.  It’s about the entertainment: the story behind the music, the image, and the attitude.  It’s not about how fast you can play notes; nor your vocal range.
– If you’re still with me: get used to running your own PR campaigns or accept that no one will hear your music.  if you do it right you may get 100 followers (not counting your friends and family) after your first campaign.  If you still believe in it after the underwhelming initial response; you may have the stomach to grow an authentic audience.
