Interview with Doctors of Space

Today, we sat down with Dr. Space to discuss their inspiration to write music, heroes, and much more!

Interview:

What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?

Dr Space- Listening to music is a huge inspiration. I hear an album and it sparks ideas and then I can go and try to improvise and create something new.  Living in the quiet of the mountains in Portugal with amazing views is also always an inspiration that you can take with you when you walk back into the studio.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

Dr Space-  My parents did not really listen to music but my dad had a Beatles compilation, a couple of CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival) and Chuck Berry records, so I played those a lot.  But it was the radio growing up in California (KMET and KLOS) that played what we call classic rock. Also, the older kids in the neighbourhood would blast out their cars Zeppelin. Camel, YES, Robin Trower, the big rock bands of the days. I was hooked…

Is there someone you looked up as a hero?

Dr Space- Doug Walker (RIP) from Alien Planetscapes was a huge inspiration as a synthesizer player and he turned me onto a whole world of music I knew nothing about and really changed me.  I also look up to all the amazing musicians that I have been able to share the stage with like Stefan Krey (Gas Giant), Magnus Hannibal (Mantric Muse), Jonathan Segel (Camper van Beethoven), and many more…

If you weren’t a musician, would you be doing today?

Dr Space- Well, I had a whole career in science (as an Endocrinologist) before I became a musician, so I would be continuing that if I had not choose to retire at 52 and just focus on music!!

What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create
music?

Dr Space-  Listen, really listen to music, turn off that fucking smart phone, which is making you dumber, and put on real albums and listen.. Study the music, let it inspire you, practice and keep exploring, trying stuff you never thought about trying and do not be afraid, just go for it.  It is hard to make unique music today as it has all been done so you have to make music that makes you happy first and foremost. If you like it and have fun, then that is all the matters.
