Today, the multi-faceted Finn Wolfhard shares a new track and accompanying music video for the latest release from his debut solo record Happy Birthday, due out June 6th via AWAL.
“Objection!” is another impressive offering, driven by a bright acoustic guitar, “Objection!” is a relatable track about losing yourself in a relationship, for better or for worse. Strong strumming backs Wolfhard’s layered vocals as he laments, “The happiness of it all, set back by you.”
The music video, directed by Marcus Mazzula and filmed entirely on 16mm film, shows Finn exploring the snowy landscapes of British Columbia and performing the song with his guitar while embarking on a journey with no real destination. Between drawing inspiration from the sincerity and playfulness from many Beatles music videos to incorporating 70’s camera movements, the video maintains the tracks energy while providing a stunning visual accompaniment.

Happy Birthday marks Wolfhard’s first solo release after several releases with his bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys. A dizzying rush of nine songs, the album grew out of Wolfhard’s personal challenge to pen 50 songs by the end of 2022. Across Happy Birthday’s tracks, Wolfhard explores themes such as anxiety, losing and rediscovering oneself in a relationship, the carefree spirit of childhood, and more, all through a framing that reflects both maturity and never-ending growth. The project is a dynamic, relatable portrait of the transition out of adolescence and stands as another compelling showcase of Wolfhard’s creative talent.
“Objection!” is the third single off of Happy Birthday. The first offering “Choose the latter” is a nostalgia-tinged earworm packed with sunny guitars. Last month’s release, “Trailers after dark,” is a track reminiscent of the aughts and is the perfect ballad for a rainy day.
Furthermore, his West coast run of headlining shows, titled the Objection! Tour, in support of Happy Birthday, kicks off next month, with most shows sold out.
