Austin’s Cumbia-Fusion Band Animeros Ignite SXSW

In 2024, The Animeros played their first show on February 29. According to the band’s website, “The Animeros craft a genre-blending sound that drifts between the lush jungles of Colombia, the palm-lined streets of 1960s coastal Mexico, and the dusty cantinas of West Texas.”

At an unofficial 30-minute set during SXSW later that spring, the lively group caught the ear of Dan Auerbach, who reached out to them afterwards in the interest of working with them.

The band have been releasing singles since October, and are set to release an album later this year, produced by Auerbach, and distributed by his label Easy Eye Sound out of Nashville, TN.

“We’re proud to be on that wave of Latin music that seems to go beyond Texas,” says singer-guitarist Mauro Lopez.

The Animeros had Waterloo Records & Video dancing this weekend, as the store kicked off its inaugural SXSW Day Parties at its new location on south Lamar. Among the artists that performed, The Animeros were certainly a highlight.

Bassist Nicolas Sanchez was happy to be back at the record store where he used to work.

“I have many fond memories here!” Sanchez announced from the stage, garnering a roar from the enthusiastic crowd.

Keep an ear out for the band’s new album set to release later this year, and check out the rest of the band’s SXSW schedule here:
