From the Award-winning creator of some of the most popular animated TV series of our time, including Babar, Little Bear, The Adventures of Tintin, Berenstain Bears, Franklin, The Magic School Bus, Beetlejuice, Rolie Polie Olie, Inspector Gadget, Johnny Test, Caillou, Arthur, Max & Ruby, Droids, Ewoks, Cyberchase and beyond (also an animated Star Wars short produced for George Lucas that introduced the Boba Fett character), Michael Hirsh has written a tell-all book “Animation Nation: How We Built A Cartoon Empire”, featuring untold stories of the making of some of the most cherished cartoons of all time.
We were able to get a review copy of the book Animation Nation: How We Built A Cartoon Empire. I was able to do an unboxing below of what you might see inside of the book. Then, I sat down on my couch to read the memoir of Michael Hirsh. I couldn’t put down the book as I felt like I read a documentary on how the cartoon industry had been fully developed. I know we are used to seeing a few animations here and there back in the day, but once Michael and his team took the helm, we saw an explosion of animated shows on television. I actually grew up watching many of those shows a young child.
I enjoyed how Michael talked about everything including his failures and how it happened. He pulled no punches and let you know what and how that happened. Those failures did lead him to build very successful shows that continue to be rewatched on streaming television today. I’m not going to spoil much, but this is a must read book for anyone. You don’t have to be a business major, film major, or any of that to understand his concept and story. This book features stories of a real life industry explosion that changed the world as we know it today.

Pro:
- Story
- Michael Hirsh journey in animation took my breath away. As I read each page, his personal story of success on various companies had launched many storied cartoon shows. I grew up with lot of those shows including Beetlejuice, Babar, and countless more. His meeting with the legend himself George Lucas was fantastic. The work with George Lucas and Star Wars showcased both their love of creativity. Michael did talk about some hard ships throughout the book and how one failure would lead to a success. I enjoyed his never give up persona!
- Behind The Scenes Pictures
- I enjoyed seeing behind the scene pictures that Michael was able to share throughout the book. The personal pictures he put into the book where he showed the people he knew, networked, and worked with in the animation business. I was amazed at all the people he has met on his journey for his cartoon empire.
